A little treat without an oven
Milo balls are a calm kitchen project for a tea table, children’s party or VLU gathering. The mixture begins with familiar Marie biscuits and Milo, while butter gives it enough richness to roll into neat balls.
The important part is adding the milk gradually. Crumbs vary slightly, so the mixture should hold together when pressed between your fingers without sticking to your hands.
“A good ball begins with fine crumbs and ends with enough time in the fridge.”
Choose your own finish
Coconut gives a light, classic outside; Milo keeps the flavour simple and even; cocoa-coconut brings a darker colour and a little more bitterness. Use one finish for a large batch or roll half of each kind.
The balls become cold and firm but stay soft enough to bite easily. Make them small and even so the batch chills at the same rate and looks tidy on a plate.

Mix, roll and chill
Work with fine crumbs and cool hands. If the mixture feels warm or very soft, give it a short rest in the fridge first.
- Crush the Marie biscuits very finely. A food processor is quick, but a bag and rolling pin work just as well.
- Mix the biscuit crumbs, Milo, icing sugar and salt in a large bowl. Break up any lumps with the back of a spoon.
- Stir in the melted butter and vanilla essence. Add the milk a little at a time until the mixture holds together when pressed between your fingers.
- Leave the mixture for 10 minutes so the crumbs can absorb the liquid. It should be soft enough to roll, but not wet or greasy.
- Divide the mixture into 36 even portions and roll each one with cool, clean hands into a smooth ball. Roll each ball in coconut.
- Place the balls on baking paper and chill for at least 30 minutes. Then store them in an airtight container in the fridge.

Helpful tips
- Crush the biscuits finely so the balls do not fall apart as you roll them.
- Add the milk slowly; a dry mixture is easier to correct than one that has become wet.
- Use baking paper under the finished balls so the coating stays neat and they are easy to move.
Serve and store safely
- Serve with rooibos tea as a small sweet treat.
- Store between layers of baking paper in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days.
- Leave them out for 5 minutes before serving so the centre is not too firm.
- Check the labels on the Milo, Marie biscuits and coating. The recipe contains dairy and wheat/gluten, plus coconut when you choose that coating.
