Which needle, thread and stitch length work for denim?

Use a size 90/14 denim needle for medium denim, a 100/16 needle for thick layers, strong polyester thread and a stitch length of about 3 mm.

The correct denim needle, strong thread and longer stitch length help the machine feed thick layers evenly.

The simplest combination for the lined VLU denim tote bag is a sharp denim needle, strong polyester thread and a slightly longer straight stitch. A size 90/14 needle usually suits medium-weight denim; choose 100/16 when handles, seams and lining create a thick stack.

Match the needle to the actual layers

  • Always use a fresh denim needle; a blunt or bent needle skips stitches and may break the thread.
  • Use regular strong polyester thread in the bobbin and on top. Very heavy decorative thread belongs on top only when the machine can handle it.
  • Set the straight stitch to about 3 mm. A visible topstitch can look neat at 3–3.5 mm.

Fold a denim offcut to the same thickness as the real seam. Sew slowly and check that the stitches are balanced above and below. Change tension only in small steps; an unsuitable needle or incorrectly threaded machine is often the real problem.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the thread break at thick seams?

Check that the needle is large and fresh enough, the thread is correctly routed and the machine is not racing over the thick section.

Can ordinary cotton machine thread be used?

It can work for light denim, but polyester thread is generally stronger and better suited to a bag that regularly carries weight.
