3 essential vitamins: the right form matters

It is not always enough merely to see ‘vitamin D’, ‘vitamin B1’ or ‘vitamin C’ on a label. The form in which a vitamin occurs can be an important part of the recommendation. Here are three essential vitamins, why they deserve attention and which specific forms are preferred.

Vitamin D3 together with vitamin K2 MK-7

Vitamin D is often associated with bones because it helps the body absorb calcium. It is also associated with immune-system function, muscle strength and energy production.

Possible signs of low vitamin D include bone pain, chronic fatigue, muscle weakness, stiffness and body pain, frequent infections, low motivation and mood changes.

The specific form recommended is vitamin D3. When vitamin D3 is used as a supplement, it is recommended together with vitamin K2 in the MK-7 form. Vitamin D3 increases calcium absorption, while vitamin K2 is associated with the handling of that calcium.

Vitamin K2 helps direct calcium away from soft tissue and towards the bones. The precise form preferred is MK-7, which is described as the natural form of vitamin K2. It is distinguished from MK-4, which is described as a synthetic form.

The complete recommendation is therefore not merely to take vitamin D. It is to choose vitamin D3 and, when appropriate, combine it with vitamin K2 in the MK-7 form. This distinction is especially important when larger amounts of vitamin D3 are used, because high amounts of vitamin D can raise the amount of calcium in the blood and urine.

Vitamin B1: energy, nerves and carbohydrates

Vitamin B1 is also known as thiamine. It is associated with energy production, the nervous system and the processing of carbohydrates.

A diet containing a great deal of sugar and refined carbohydrates can increase the need for vitamin B1. A person can therefore consume a great deal of food and energy yet still develop signs associated with low vitamin B1.

Possible signs include fatigue, brain fog, restless legs, tingling or numbness, nerve discomfort, poor stress tolerance, muscle problems and difficulty concentrating. Vitamin B1 is sometimes called the ‘great imitator’ because a deficiency can produce many different symptoms.

Unfortified nutritional yeast is recommended as an excellent natural source of vitamin B1. The word unfortified matters: fortified nutritional yeast contains vitamins added later, while unfortified nutritional yeast is chosen for the vitamins that occur naturally in it.

Allithiamine and benfotiamine

When a B1 supplement is considered, two specific forms are named. Allithiamine is recommended as a natural form of vitamin B1 and is preferred when someone is looking for a natural B1 supplement form.

Benfotiamine is a fat-soluble form of vitamin B1. It is highlighted particularly in the context of blood-sugar problems and nerve discomfort.

The two forms should therefore not disappear beneath the generic label ‘vitamin B1’: allithiamine is the preferred natural supplement form, benfotiamine is the fat-soluble form used in specific circumstances, and unfortified nutritional yeast is the recommended natural food source.

A natural whole-food vitamin C complex

Vitamin C is associated with the immune system, collagen and the structure of connective tissue. Collagen forms part of, among other things, the skin, gums, blood vessels, joints and connective tissue.

Possible signs of low vitamin C include bleeding gums, receding gums, fatigue, a loss of collagen and weaker connective tissue.

The most important distinction is that ascorbic acid is not regarded as the complete vitamin C complex. Ascorbic acid is described as only one part of the whole complex. A supplement containing only ascorbic acid is therefore not regarded as the same as a natural whole-food vitamin C complex.

The specific form recommended is a natural, whole-food-based vitamin C complex. The ingredients should be checked to establish whether a product offers a complete vitamin C complex or consists mainly of isolated ascorbic acid.

Food sources highlighted for their natural vitamin C complex include peppers, raw sauerkraut, dark-green leafy vegetables, cabbage, berries, citrus fruit, lemons and limes. Green peppers and raw sauerkraut are emphasised particularly strongly.

The recommendation is therefore not merely to obtain more vitamin C. It is to choose vitamin C from whole foods or use a natural whole-food vitamin C complex rather than a product containing only isolated ascorbic acid.

The central message

For vitamin D, the specific form is vitamin D3 together with vitamin K2 MK-7. For vitamin B1, allithiamine is highlighted as a natural supplement form and benfotiamine as a fat-soluble form; unfortified nutritional yeast is the recommended natural food source. For vitamin C, the preference is a natural whole-food vitamin C complex, not merely isolated ascorbic acid.
