Between the lines

• The design is presented on a table and a frame is compulsory.
• The available space is 90 cm deep and 70 cm wide.
• The design may not extend beyond this space, but should not make poor use of it either.
• Use two thirds of the given space purposefully.
• There is no fixed height limit, but the height must be visually balanced with the width and depth.
• The design is judged from the front only.
• The table covering and background are white; choose colours and lines that read clearly against white.

The complete arrangement must be assembled during the conference or congress and may not be brought in already completed. Prefabricated components may be used, provided they do not dominate the design. Accessories are allowed when they support the theme.

Fresh or dried plant material may be used. Painted, artificially coloured or skeletonised plant parts are also allowed. Natural plant material must, however, always dominate the non-natural components. Artificial flowers, leaves or other artificial plant material are not allowed.

Fresh material must be placed in a water-holding medium, except where it will remain fresh and firm without water for the full duration of the show.

• Choose one dominant line direction and use other directions as support.
• Leave enough open space so the frame and the “between” spaces remain part of the design.
• Repeat shapes or colours to lead the eye through the arrangement.
• Limit accessories; the frame, lines and plant material must tell the story.
• Test the design beforehand within a marked floor or table area of 90 x 70 cm.
• View the work continuously from the front, as this is the judging view.
• Keep the white background in mind when choosing very pale or thin components.

1. Design and measure the frame beforehand.
2. Plan the line direction, focal point, colour distribution and negative space.
3. Prepare permitted components in advance, but leave the final assembly for the arranging time.
4. Condition fresh plant material thoroughly.
5. Pack all tools, water-holding media and fastening materials in advance.
6. Build the frame and main lines first, then place the plant material and add accessories last.

Mobile phones may not be used during the arranging time. The judges’ decision is final.
